Mickle Maher

Mickle Maher was nominated for a 2025 Harvey award for best adaptation of a comic (stage or screen), runner-up for the 2025 ATCA/Steinberg new play award, and the winner of the 2025 Jeff award for new work, for his play Berlin, an adaptation of Jason Lutes’ sprawling graphic novel about the rise of German fascism in the Weimar era. His plays have been developed and supported by The Goodman Theatre, Steppenwolf Theatre, Cleveland Public Theatre, Philadelphia Theatre Company, The Court Theatre, the NEA, the Rockefeller MAP fund, and Creative Capital. Called "One of the most original voices in American theater today" by the Houston Chronicle, with work described as "uniquely weird and enthralling" (Variety), his plays include It is Magic; There is a Happiness That Morning Is; Song About Himself; The Hunchback Variations; Spirits to Enforce; book and lyrics for the musical Small Ball; An Apology for the Course and Outcome of Certain Events Delivered by Doctor John Faustus on This His Final Evening; The Strangerer; Jim Lehrer and the Theater and Its Double and Jim Lehrer’s Double; Cyrano (translator); The Cabinet; The Pine; and An Actor Prepares (an adaptation of Stanislavsky's seminal book). He is a co-founder of Chicago’s long-lived Theater Oobleck.
